Deadbolt locks give you doors an extra degree of security. If you want to buy one of these locks, you will need to consider a few things beforehand. Some of these include cylinder, bolt length, and strike plate. This article will give you a few tips for buying deadbolt locks.

Bolt Length

One of the first things you need to consider when buying deadbolt locks is their bolt length. The bolt is designed to lock the door into the frame. You should make sure that the bolt will extend at least one inch into the door. Deadbolt locks with longer bolts won't be susceptible to being pried open.

Strike Plate

One of the next things to consider when buying deadbolt locks is the strike plate. The strike plate will help prevent would-be intruders from damaging the door and lock. You should look for deadbolt locks that have reinforced strike plates. You also need to make sure the screws are long enough for the strike plate to be attached to the framing.

Cylinder

You will also need to think about how many cylinders you want the deadbolt locks to have. Designs that have a single cylinder are opened from the inside with a twisting knob. They require a key in order to open from the outside. deadbolt locks with two cylinders require that a key be used on both sides of the door. This can make it more difficult to escape from your home in the event of an emergency.

Roll Pin

One of the next things you need to think about when buying deadbolt locks is the roll pin. The roll pin can be a target for people wanting to defeat the lock. Therefore, you should look for deadbolt locks that have hardened roll pins. This pins will be able to withstand cutting and sawing better.

Electronic

You should also consider buying electronic deadbolt locks. Many electronic designs feature keyless entry, while some designs will automatically lock the door if you forget to do so. Some electronic deadbolt locks also have visual and audible signals to alert you in case the deadbolt isn't locked securely.

These a a few things to consider when buying deadbolt locks. You should look for a design that has hardened roll pins so that they won't be susceptible to cutting and sawing. You should also make sure the the bolt extends at least one inch inside the door.

The added security of a deadbolt lock can bring a bit more peace of mind, while doing it yourself will save you some money, possibly quite a bit. Before you begin, you need to determine what type of deadbolt lock will work best for the specific door and based on what is required for the installation.

Deadbolt locks are available in two styles, internal and external. An internal deadbolt is mounted inside your door and requires drilling into the door for both the handle and the plunger. An external deadbolt is mounted on the inside surface of the door.

The vast majority of deadbolt locks on the market are of the internal type. But, if you have a typical metal apartment door, which is very common in New York City according to The Keyless Lock Store, you will not be able to install an internal deadbolt lock. For metal doors with a flush frame, you will need to install an external deadbolt or surface mount deadbolt lock.

The last deadbolt lock I installed had an electronic keypad with key backup. We could give our children the combination and not a key. We did not worry about a key being lost and could change the combination as needed. At the time I felt we had improved our home's security. I do not feel that way anymore. The deadbolt had a key slot and key, for backup use if the batteries wore out and did not operate the electronic mechanism. Most locks with a key slot can be bumped or picked.

A better choice would have been a keyless mechanical lock, such as those by Lockey Systems. Installing an external deadbolt requires fewer tools and is somewhat less complicated than for an internal deadbolt.

Step 1: The lock is configured for a right hand door. Follow the supplied instructions to change the lock to a left hand door configuration, if your door is a left hand door. To determine which type of door you have, stand on the outside of the door. If the door hinges are on the right side, the door is a right hand door. If the door hinges are on the left side, the door is a left hand door. It does not matter if the door pushes in or pulls out, when on the outside of the door. The determining factor is where the hinges are.

Step 2: Hold the supplied template against the door and decide where the lock will be positioned, making sure both sides of the door are clear of any obstructions for the lock plates.

Step 3: Using the template, mark the drill holes.

Step 4: Using an electric drill, drill the holes using the correct bit based on the manufacturer's instructions. The drill holes must be of the correct diameter to allow the the shaft or spindle to pass through the door from the inside to the outside.

Step 5: Following the manufacturer's instructions, with the door open, put the lock components on the outside of the door and then the inside of the door, fitting the shaft from the inside through the door into the turning knob on the outside. Using the screws provided, secure the lockset.

Step 6: On the inside with the door closed, throw the deadbolt. Hold the strike plate on the door jam and mark where the screws will be placed, making sure the deadbolt fits through the slot in the strike plate. Screw the strike plate in place.

Step 7: Set the lock combination following the manufacturer's instructions.

That is all there is to installing a bump-free and pick-free external deadbolt lock.

The weather today

VOLMET stations broadcast weather reports to aircrafts in flight. The name is a combination of two French words, vol, meaning “aircraft,” and météo, meaning “weather.”

Three VOLMET stations that serve aircraft on trans-Atlantic routes are located in New York City, Gander, Newfoundland, and Shannon, Ireland.

These VOLMET stations serve planes out of the range of weather radar. They broadcast in amplitude modulation upper-sideband mode. AM is sent via a carrier wave with a wave, or band, on each side that contains the content. Music needs both sidebands to be heard clearly. Voice needs only one. The sideband mode thus saves bandwidth. Marconi used it to send code across the Atlantic. In a digital age, this relic of the analog era survives.

The New York City VOLMET station is WSY70. I hear it on 3.485 megahertz in the 90 meter short wave band. Its transmitter site is on the Atlantic Ocean, near Barnegat Light, New Jersey, about 90 miles south of New York City. Its control point is in New York, and its ID is “this is New York radio.”

On the website of radio amateur W8JYZ are two PDF files that tell the story of New York aviation weather radio and station WSY70.

WSY70 shares its frequency with VFG, the VOLMET station serving the international airport at Gander, Newfoundland. It's among the least-known broadcasting stations that legally ID as New York, one of the more useful, and one of the most intriguing.

It broadcasts the wind speed and direction, cloud cover, visibility, temp and dew point, and precipitation, for airports in the eastern third of the United States. That's everything pilots need, and all anyone needs to visualize the conditions in a particular location. It gives the time every five minutes. There's no need to keep looking at the clock, as long as one can convert Zulu (GMT) to local time. There's also no need to get up and change the station when a bad song comes on, or when a talk show host's topic becomes the contents of Sarah Palin's closet.

WSY70 broadcasts for the first twenty minutes of each hour and signs off. VFG Gander VOLMET takes over from :20 to :30 after and broadcasts the same info for airports in Canada. WSY70 returns for another twenty minutes, and VFG for the last ten.

Each station has a range of several hundred miles, using the old reliable AM upper-sideband mode. Trans-Atlantic pilots leaving the eastern US can start with New York, switch to Gander, and stay with it over the Atlantic until Shannon can be heard.

On my trips to Paris, when there was nothing to do but look out the window at Iceland, I would think about what I might hear if my home listening post was with me.

All three VOLMET stations would be listenable, and a place no doubt exists, in the middle of the Atlantic, where Gander and Shannon can both be heard loud and clear.

It's also fun to tune away from the Big Talkers and Fresh Music Mixes to 3.485 for some VOLMET. The later the hour, the better. I can find out what the next day's weather might be at my location, and imagine what might be going on in the cockpit of a plane headed for Paris, or the darkened WSY70 control room. It sparks the imagination, the way radio used to.

Bank Checks

For those of you who label yourselves as p.c., thin-skinned, sensitive, or any applicable synonym let me first throw in my disclaimer: I love women, I am married to one so please understand that I am presenting information based purely on real observations. I tend to pose questions and make all kinds of observations as they relate to every race, sex, religion or any other defining human characteristics including my own. If you've made it this far without blowing me off then please proceed to the following paragraph. I promise brevity and clarity.

We Americans, as a society, have quickly transformed our world of commerce into a nearly paperless one. Over the past ten years or so we have managed to effectively reduce the need for such things as consumer catalogs like the JC Penny or Sears monstrosities of old, snail mail, hard copy bank statements and even personal checks. There are countless other changes that have been made as well and I could list them for you but I think that you smell what I'm stepping in here. I would like you to revisit, for a moment, the last example given in my previous short list: personal checks. This particular, now archaic form of payment is on its way out for us Americans. We have discovered the convenience of the Debit or aptly named “Check” card which allows us to blow through checkout lines in our favorite retail establishments like Michael Moore blows through a box of donuts. We simply acknowledge our total bill given by the cashier, swipe our cards through the appropriate reader and let the bank handle the exchange of monies. For a culture that now thrives on its primal urge for instant gratification this form of payment has been a true gift. There is however one segment of society left that desperately clings to the ancient way of scratching out a personal check.

Over the past few years I have observed a disturbing trend. Every time that I find myself standing in the checkout line at my local grocery store and there appears to be some hold up at the register it inevitably proves to be some woman fumbling with a personal check. Now, before you begin to curse me with your sexist epithets I acknowledge that not all women are firing off personal checks from the hip like Billy the Kid in a wild-west shootout. All I am saying is that of those dinosaurs who still seem to use this form of payment at the grocery store a good 8 or 9 out of 10 appear to be women. I'm not even suggesting that this staunch group covers all ages. In fact, my experience has shown them to be at least 40 years of age and beyond, often times well beyond. This strange occurrence has left me with several questions, some of which I have posed to my wife but unfortunately she doesn't represent the true cross section of these check writing individuals.

I realize that I have a virtual archaeological dig to perform if I am to research the reasons why this behavior is so gender and age specific but I do intend to get to the bottom of this matter. In the meantime if you know anyone or even if you happen to be one of these Stone Age creatures can you please consider making your life and the lives of those who wait in line behind you easier by just making the effortless switch from checks to check cards? Thank you.
